GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between fraternal twins and identical twins? Q. In your answer, be sure to explain how fraternal twins and identical twins are formed? Asked by Dustin - Tue Apr 27 18:27:06 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Identical twins are the result of a single egg being fertilized by a single sperm. The single fertilized egg then divides into two separate embryos that go on to become identical twins. Fraternal twins are the result of two separate eggs being ovulated at the same time. In this instance, two different sperm are responsible for fertilizing the two eggs. Answered by Scott - Tue Apr 27 18:28:54 2010 Chances of conceiving fraternal twins of the opposite sex naturally? Q. What are the chances of having fraternal twins of the opposite sex naturally? (one boy, one girl) Is there anything to increase the chance of having fraternal or identical twins, or something to increase the chance that you would have a boy or girl? Asked by JenniferRose19 - Mon Mar 16 02:02:02 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Identical twins are by chance. Fraternal twins can run in families (only on the mothers side). If you are not taking fertility drugs your chances of girl/boy, girl/girl and boy/boy is one third (1/3) for each. Regarding fraternal twins having girl/boy twins is just slightly higher than girl/girl and boy/boy twins if you are taking fertility drugs. The pie is divided into three, one section girl/girl, one section boy/boy and one section girl/boy. Because I took fertility drugs I knew I was not having identical twins. This eliminated a small portion of girl/girl and boy/boy twins (25%?) that were identical. From looking at the pie I saw that I was more likely to have boy/girl twins. And that is what I had! Answered by mermaid - Mon Mar 16 02:26:54 2009 I am a fraternal twin. I have heard that my chances of having twins with my husband are increased, is it true?
Q. My husband thinks that our chances of having fraternal twins will be increased because I am a fraternal twin. I have heard that fraternal twins are genetic. My mom's family has had several sets. I read somewhere that the chances are higher for me but I am skeptical. Who's right? Asked by wondering - Sun Jun 4 12:25:19 2006 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. Who knows who is right? Natural (no fertility drugs) twins & multiples are still something that boggle scientists minds. Identical twins are random - freak of nature, and why they happen more in some families again is unknown. Identical is when one egg is fertilized and splits. Fraternal twins go through the mothers side only. Fraternal is where 2 eggs are fertilized. The "skip one generation" theory works in some families, and in some it doesn't. I have fraternal twin daughters. The one twins in my family history are 1 set on my mom's side (her cousins) and 1 set on my dad's side (my great-grandmother's siblings). Not exactly following any pattern hey? So with us, totally random, we were just blessed with twins.
