Germany ( / ˈ dʒ ɜr m ən i /), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced [ˈbʊndəsʁepuˌbliːk ˈdɔʏtʃlant] ( listen)), is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 81.8 million inhabitants in 2010, it has the largest population among member states of the European Union, and it is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide. A region named Germania, inhabited by several Germanic peoples, has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. After World War II, Germany was divided in 1949 into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation. Germany was reunified in 1990 upon the entry of the German Democratic Republic into the Federal Republic. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen Area and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999. Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Bundesländer). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, and the OECD. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the second largest exporter and third largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranked seventh. The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields. GNU Free Documentation License For travel between Germany and Switzerland should I buy a eurail pass? Q. I'm planning to travel between Switzerland and Germany in Sept. My plan is to visit about 7 cities in 10 days, is it better to buy the eurail pass or buy individual tickets? Asked by Amy H - Fri Jul 3 16:09:15 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is often cheaper to buy individual tickets rather than a Eurail pass. Especially, if you'll be taking the faster trains that require an extra reservation/supplemental fee and/or are able to take advantage of discounts by buying individual tickets in advance. There's information on supplements here: and: and: You can check the prices for individual tickets at: (Germany) , (Switzerland) You just need to put together your tentative itinerary and check the different trains. Add up the prices for the individual tickets and compare to the price of the pass plus all required supplements. Asked by ! - Sun Aug 22 22:58:54 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Turkish immigrants started to immigrate Germany as early as 1960's. Germans didn't immigrate to Turkey, with the exception of some Jews who used to live in Germany. This is not an exchange but the German government needed unskilled labor workers after WWII. Even if German government halted the program decades ago, many Turks still find ways to immigrate to Germany, such as getting married. Lately Turks also started to immigrate to Britain, mainly through illegal ways. Germans usually don't like Turks because after moving to Germany for temporary work, they didn't leave the country when they are not needed anymore. Even if the German government is trying to prevent racism with laws, the minds of many Germans are still hostile towards Turks… [cont.] Answered by m. o - Thu Aug 26 11:11:47 2010 What would result if Germany was the first country to industrialize?
Q. if Germany, instead of Britain was the first to industrialize, and become a great power... what are some long term effects of this??? how would have the age of imperialism change? how would world war one have changed? how would world war two change? cold war? Asked by mcr.fan93 - Tue Jun 2 19:46:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Completely unlikely. Get your facts sorted out first. There were only two nations that started to industrialize early: England and France. Germany didn't even exist. They were a bunch of smaller independent states. Only after Germany unified became serious industrialization possible.Even Prussia alone (which was industrialized) wouldn't have made a great impact.
