A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. It can mean the collection, the building or room that houses such a collection, or both. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use," and in this sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology.

Public and institutional collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to — or cannot afford to — purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research. In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs.

However, with the sets and collection of media and of media other than books for storing information, many libraries are now also repositories and access points for maps, prints, or other documents and various storage media such as microform (microfilm/microfiche), audio tapes, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, and video games. Libraries may also provide public facilities to access subscription databases and the Internet.

Thus, modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are understood as extending beyond the physical walls of a building, by including material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of knowledge with a variety of digital tools.

What has happened to libraries for information sources?
Q. I know that the internet is great for resources. The last project my daughter had to do required 50%computer and 50% books.Have libraries disappeared? Pamela B My daughter is a frequent user of the library.not one person has ever mentioned using the library or books for info.We have a school and public library.Often book encyclopaedias offer more information than the internet for research.Teachers need to spend more time with kids helping them to research properly before kids use the ability to think. and use appropiate references. Our teachers were not too keen on kids using the internet too much. That is all.

A. Not every student has a computer or Internet access at home. Libraries have been de-emphasized by some schools/teachers due to the "ease" of finding information online. However, the schools are not teaching how to verify information or how to know when a website is maintained by a legitimate, reputable source. Schools are not even teaching how to find information in books! And before anyone claims I'm slandering teachers, my mom retired after 30+ years as a teacher, and my sister is in her 4th year as a teacher. I use my own experiences and the quality of teaching they provide to the students in their care. Sadly, many teachers never visit their local public libraries to see if students can find the answers to assignments in the… [cont.]

How can I access shared itunes libraries behind my router?
Q. When I plug the network cable directly into my laptop, a good number of shared libraries appear that I can access. But when I plug that same network cable into my wireless router, and try to access those libraries via my wireless, they no longer appear. I would like to be able to access those libraries with my wireless internet connection. Help!

A. the router is acting as a firewall and blocking your connection. Itunes cannot communicate from computer to computer if one is plugged into the wan port. the catch is, you might not be able to access the internet wirelessly if you plug your ethernet connection originally going to the laptop into something other than the wan port. 2 solutions for you: 1. take the cable out from the PC and plug that into the wan port on the router, then plug the PC into the router and connect to the laptop wirelessly. 2. Disable DHCP on the router and plug the cord into anything but the wan port, then remove and reinsert the power cable to the router. (router is an access point and routing functions are not used)

A. The Gutenberg Project has tens of thousands of books available for free download in pdf If, by chance, there is something you can't find there... then one of my English professors gave me this site, which is basically the same thing and was put together by the University of Pennsylvania: All copyrighted material is illegal to download. Here are some sites that have non-copywrited material for reading: but I would try the Gutenberg Project first. I think their collection is more extensive.
